Christopher Dearnley was a renowned British organist and conductor who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. Born on 19th October 1930 in London, Dearnley showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of six. He later switched to the organ and became a chorister at St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Dearnley's talent as an organist was quickly recognized, and he was appointed as the assistant organist at St. Paul's Cathedral in 1950. He held this position for six years before moving to St. Albans Cathedral, where he served as the organist and master of the choristers from 1956 to 1967. During his time at St. Albans, Dearnley established himself as a leading figure in the world of classical music and gained a reputation for his exceptional musicianship. In 1967, Dearnley was appointed as the organist and master of the choristers at Salisbury Cathedral, a position he held until his retirement in 1990. During his tenure at Salisbury, Dearnley made significant contributions to the cathedral's music program and established himself as one of the most respected organists in the world. Dearnley's career was marked by numerous highlights, including his performance at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. He also performed at the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, and at the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997. In addition to his performances at royal events, Dearnley was a regular performer at major music festivals and concerts throughout the UK and Europe. Dearnley was also a prolific recording artist, and his recordings of classical music on the organ are considered some of the finest ever made. He recorded extensively for the Argo label, and his recordings of the works of Bach, Handel, and other composers are still highly regarded by music critics and enthusiasts. In addition to his work as an organist, Dearnley was also a respected conductor and choral director. He conducted numerous choirs throughout his career, including the Salisbury Cathedral Choir, and was known for his ability to bring out the best in his performers.
