Rose's musical career began in earnest when he became the organist and choirmaster at St. Alban's Church in Holborn, London, at the age of 21. He held this position for six years before moving on to become the organist and choirmaster at St. Margaret's Church in Westminster. During his time at St. Margaret's, Rose established a reputation as a talented conductor and composer, and he was soon invited to conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1968, Rose was appointed the director of music at St. Paul's Cathedral, a position he held for 11 years. During his tenure, he oversaw the music for many important events, including the wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981. He also conducted the choir at the funeral of Sir Winston Churchill in 1965 and at the wedding of Princess Anne in 1973.
