William Horsley was a British composer, pianist, and conductor who lived from 1774 to 1858. He was born in Bath, England, to a family of musicians. His father, William Horsley Sr., was a well-known organist and composer, and his mother, Mary, was a singer. William Jr. showed an early aptitude for music and began studying the piano and composition at a young age. Horsley's musical education continued at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied under the renowned composer and pianist Johann Nepomuk Hummel. He also studied with the composer and conductor William Crotch, who was a professor at the academy. Horsley's talent as a pianist was recognized early on, and he became a sought-after performer in London's musical circles. In addition to his work as a pianist, Horsley was also a prolific composer. He wrote music in a variety of genres, including opera, oratorio, chamber music, and songs. One of his most famous works is the oratorio "The Captivity of Judah," which was first performed in 1811. The piece tells the story of the Babylonian captivity of the Jewish people and features a large chorus and orchestra. Horsley's other notable works include the opera "Matilda," which premiered in 1819, and the song cycle "The Widow of Nain," which was composed in 1820. He also wrote a number of chamber music pieces, including string quartets and piano trios. In addition to his work as a composer, Horsley was also a respected conductor. He served as the conductor of the Philharmonic Society of London from 1820 to 1822 and conducted many of his own works as well as those of other composers. Horsley's music was well-received during his lifetime, and he was regarded as one of the leading composers of his day. However, his reputation declined in the years following his death, and his music fell out of favor. It was not until the 20th century that his work began to be rediscovered and appreciated once again. Today, Horsley is remembered as an important figure in the history of British classical music.
