Charles Hylton Stewart was a British composer and conductor who lived from 1884 to 1932. He was born in London, England, and showed an early interest in music. His parents were both amateur musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue his passion for music. Stewart began his musical education at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where he studied composition with Frederick Corder and piano with Tobias Matthay. He also studied conducting with Henry Wood, who would later become a famous conductor himself. After completing his studies at the Royal Academy of Music, Stewart began his career as a conductor. He worked with several orchestras in England, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. He also conducted the premiere of Ralph Vaughan Williams' "A Sea Symphony" in 1910. Stewart's compositions were influenced by the Romantic era of classical music, and he was known for his use of lush harmonies and sweeping melodies. His most famous work is his Symphony No. 1 in D minor, which was premiered in 1913. The symphony was well-received by audiences and critics alike, and it established Stewart as a major composer. In addition to his symphonies, Stewart also composed several other works for orchestra, including a piano concerto and a violin concerto. He also wrote chamber music, choral music, and songs. Stewart's career was cut short by his untimely death in 1932 at the age of 48. However, his music continues to be performed and recorded today, and he is remembered as one of the most important British composers of the early 20th century.
