Artist Info
Birth:February 2, 1938 in Centerville, IAPeriod:ClassicalRomanticModernGenre:ChoralOperaSymphonyVocalSimon Estes is a renowned classical music artist who has made a significant impact on the world of opera and concert singing. Born on February 2, 1938, in Centerville, Iowa, Estes grew up in a family of musicians. His father, Simon Estes Sr., was a singer and choir director, and his mother, Lillian, was a pianist. From a young age, Estes showed a natural talent for music, and he began singing in his father's church choir when he was just five years old. Estes attended the University of Iowa, where he studied voice and music education. He also played football for the university, earning a scholarship as a defensive tackle. After graduating in 1962, Estes taught music in the public schools of Iowa for several years before pursuing a career in opera. In 1965, Estes made his professional debut with the Deutsche Oper Berlin, singing the role of Ramfis in Verdi's Aida. This performance launched his career as an international opera singer, and he quickly became known for his powerful bass-baritone voice and commanding stage presence. Over the next several years, Estes performed with some of the world's most prestigious opera companies, including the Metropolitan Opera, the Royal Opera House in London, and La Scala in Milan. One of Estes' most notable performances was his portrayal of the title role in Wagner's The Flying Dutchman at the Bayreuth Festival in 1978. This performance was particularly significant because Estes was the first African American to sing a leading role at the festival, which had a reputation for being racially exclusive. Estes' performance was widely praised, and he went on to perform the role at the Metropolitan Opera and other major opera houses around the world. Estes has also had a successful career as a concert singer, performing with major orchestras and conductors around the world. He has recorded numerous albums, including a collection of spirituals and gospel songs that reflect his upbringing in the African American church. In addition to his performing career, Estes has been a dedicated educator and mentor to young singers. He has taught at several universities, including the University of Iowa, Indiana University, and Boston University. He has also established the Simon Estes Foundation, which provides scholarships and mentorship to young singers from underprivileged backgrounds. Estes has received numerous awards and honors throughout his career, including the National Medal of Arts, the Kennedy Center Honors, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also been inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame and the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Despite facing discrimination and prejudice throughout his career, Estes has remained committed to breaking down barriers and promoting diversity in the world of classical music. He has been a trailblazer for African American singers and has inspired generations of young musicians to pursue their dreams. Today, at the age of 83, Estes continues to perform and teach, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the greatest classical music artists of our time.More....
