She was born on April 13, 1945, in Buffalo, New York, to a musical family. Her father was a violinist, and her mother was a pianist. Coburn grew up in a musical environment and started singing at a young age. Coburn received her early education at the Buffalo Academy of the Sacred Heart. She then went on to study at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1967. She continued her studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she received a Master of Music degree in 1969. Coburn made her professional debut in 1970 at the New York City Opera, where she sang the role of Barbarina in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro." She quickly gained recognition for her beautiful voice and exceptional talent. In 1972, she made her European debut at the Glyndebourne Festival in England, where she sang the role of Zerlina in Mozart's "Don Giovanni." Coburn's career continued to flourish, and she became a sought-after performer in the world of opera. She performed at some of the most prestigious opera houses in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Vienna State Opera. She also performed at numerous festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Bayreuth Festival. Coburn was known for her versatility as a performer and her ability to sing a wide range of roles. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of Mozart's operas, but she also excelled in the works of other composers, including Richard Strauss, Giuseppe Verdi, and Benjamin Britten. One of Coburn's most significant performances was her portrayal of the Countess in Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" at the Metropolitan Opera in 1985. Her performance was widely praised, and she received critical acclaim for her beautiful voice and nuanced interpretation of the role. Coburn also received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 1987, she was awarded the title of Kammersängerin by the Austrian government, which is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a singer in Austria. She was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1995 for her contributions to the world of classical music. Coburn continued to perform throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, but she also began to focus on teaching. She was a professor of voice at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna from 1995 until her retirement in 2010. She was also a visiting professor at the Eastman School of Music and the University of Michigan. Coburn passed away on March 30, 2017, at the age of 71. She left behind a legacy as one of the most talented and versatile sopranos of her generation.
