He grew up in a musical family, with his father being a church musician and his mother a singer. Nimsgern began his musical education at a young age, studying piano and singing in the church choir. He later attended the Hochschule für Musik in Munich, where he studied voice with Hermann Reutter. Nimsgern made his professional debut in 1968, singing the role of the Count in Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He quickly established himself as a leading bass-baritone, performing in major opera houses and concert halls throughout Europe and the United States. One of Nimsgern's most notable performances was his portrayal of Wotan in Wagner's Ring Cycle at the Bayreuth Festival in 1976. He also performed the role of Don Giovanni in Mozart's opera of the same name at the Salzburg Festival in 1980, and sang the title role in Verdi's Falstaff at the Vienna State Opera in 1982. Nimsgern was also a prolific concert performer, appearing with many of the world's leading orchestras and conductors. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of Bach, Handel, and Mozart, and recorded several albums of their music. In addition to his performing career, Nimsgern was also a respected teacher and mentor. He taught at the Hochschule für Musik in Munich and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and was a frequent guest lecturer at universities and conservatories around the world. Throughout his career, Nimsgern received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. He was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1985, and was made an honorary member of the Bavarian State Opera in 1990. He was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1996. Nimsgern continued to perform and teach until his retirement in 2010. He passed away on January 24, 2020, at the age of 79. His legacy as a performer, teacher, and advocate for classical music continues to inspire and influence musicians around the world.More....
