He was the son of a Dutch father and a German mother, and he grew up in a musical family. His father was a cellist, and his mother was a singer. Mengelberg began playing the piano at a young age and showed great talent. He studied at the Utrecht Conservatory and later at the Cologne Conservatory in Germany. Mengelberg made his debut as a pianist in 1892, and he quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso performer. He also began conducting around this time, and he was appointed the conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam in 1895. Mengelberg remained the conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra for over 25 years, and he helped to establish it as one of the finest orchestras in the world. Mengelberg was known for his passionate and expressive conducting style, and he was particularly renowned for his interpretations of the works of Gustav Mahler. He was a close friend of Mahler, and he conducted the premieres of several of Mahler's works, including the Symphony No. 4 and the Symphony No. 8. Mengelberg's performances of Mahler's music were highly acclaimed, and he was considered one of the foremost interpreters of Mahler's music. In addition to his work with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Mengelberg also conducted other orchestras around the world. He made several tours of the United States, and he conducted the New York Philharmonic Orchestra from 1922 to 1928. He also conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. Mengelberg was a prolific recording artist, and he made many recordings with the Concertgebouw Orchestra. His recordings of Mahler's music are particularly highly regarded, and they are still considered some of the finest recordings of Mahler's music ever made. Mengelberg's career was not without controversy, however. He was a member of the Nazi Party in the Netherlands during World War II, and he was accused of collaborating with the Nazis. After the war, he was banned from conducting in the Netherlands, and he was not allowed to conduct the Concertgebouw Orchestra again. He continued to conduct in other countries, however, and he made several recordings in the years following the war. Despite the controversy surrounding his political views, Mengelberg's contributions to classical music are undeniable. He was a brilliant conductor and pianist, and his interpretations of Mahler's music in particular are still considered some of the finest ever recorded. He died on March 21, 1951, in Zuort, Switzerland, at the age of 79.More....
