Founded in 1778, it is based in Milan, Italy, and is closely associated with the Teatro alla Scala, one of the most famous opera houses in the world. The ensemble has a rich history and has been led by some of the most distinguished conductors and singers of the past two centuries. The founding of La Scala Theater Orchestra & Chorus can be traced back to the establishment of the Teatro alla Scala in 1778. The theater was built by the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and her son, Emperor Joseph II, as a replacement for the old Ducal Theater, which had burned down in 1776. The new theater was designed by the architect Giuseppe Piermarini and was intended to be a showcase for the best in Italian opera. The orchestra and chorus were an integral part of the theater from the beginning. The first conductor of the orchestra was Giuseppe Demachi, who was succeeded by a series of distinguished musicians, including Alessandro Rolla, Carlo Coccia, and Arturo Toscanini. The chorus was led by a series of maestri di cappella, including Carlo Coccia, Gaetano Donizetti, and Arturo Toscanini. Over the years, La Scala Theater Orchestra & Chorus has been associated with some of the greatest singers and conductors of the past two centuries. In the 19th century, the theater was a favorite of the composer Giuseppe Verdi, who premiered many of his operas there, including "Nabucco," "Ernani," "Macbeth," "Rigoletto," "La Traviata," and "Otello." The theater was also a favorite of the conductor Arturo Toscanini, who led the orchestra in many memorable performances, including the premiere of Verdi's "Falstaff" in 1893. In the 20th century, La Scala Theater Orchestra & Chorus continued to be associated with some of the greatest musicians of the time. The conductor Arturo Toscanini returned to the theater in 1920 to conduct a series of concerts that were broadcast live on the radio. The theater was also a favorite of the conductor Herbert von Karajan, who led the orchestra in many memorable performances, including the premiere of Puccini's "Turandot" in 1926. In recent years, La Scala Theater Orchestra & Chorus has continued to be one of the most important classical music ensembles in the world. The orchestra has been led by some of the most distinguished conductors of the past few decades, including Riccardo Muti, Claudio Abbado, and Daniel Barenboim. The chorus has also been led by some of the most distinguished maestri di cappella of the past few decades, including Bruno Casoni, Roberto Gabbiani, and Bruno Campanella. La Scala Theater Orchestra & Chorus has performed in many of the world's most prestigious concert halls and opera houses. The ensemble has toured extensively throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and has performed at many of the world's most important music festivals, including the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Ravenna Festival. The ensemble has also recorded extensively, and its recordings have won many awards, including several Grammy Awards. In addition to its performances and recordings, La Scala Theater Orchestra & Chorus has also been involved in many educational and outreach programs. The ensemble has worked with schools and community organizations to promote classical music and to provide opportunities for young musicians to develop their skills.More....
