The Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Dresden, Germany. Founded in 1870, the orchestra has a rich history of musical excellence and has become one of the most respected orchestras in Europe. The Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra was founded by Franz Wüllner, a German conductor and composer. Wüllner was appointed as the first conductor of the orchestra and led the ensemble for the first 10 years of its existence. The orchestra was initially made up of 48 musicians and performed its first concert on November 29, 1870, at the Gewerbehaus in Dresden. Over the years, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra has had many notable conductors, including Ernst von Schuch, Fritz Busch, Karl Böhm, and Kurt Masur. Each of these conductors brought their own unique style and vision to the orchestra, helping to shape its sound and reputation. One of the highlights of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra's history was its performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony in 1942. This performance was conducted by Karl Böhm and was broadcast live on German radio. The performance was seen as a symbol of German culture and was used as propaganda by the Nazi regime. After World War II, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra faced many challenges. The city of Dresden had been heavily bombed, and many of the orchestra's members had been killed or injured. Despite these challenges, the orchestra continued to perform and rebuild. In 1955, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra appointed Kurt Masur as its conductor. Masur was a talented conductor and helped to bring the orchestra back to its former glory. Under his leadership, the orchestra performed at many prestigious venues, including the Salzburg Festival and the BBC Proms. In 1985, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra was awarded the National Prize of East Germany for its contributions to the country's cultural life. This was a significant honor and helped to cement the orchestra's reputation as one of the best in Europe. In 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra faced new challenges. The orchestra had to adapt to a new political and economic climate, and many of its members left to pursue other opportunities. Despite these challenges, the orchestra continued to perform and attract new talent. In 2011, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra appointed Michael Sanderling as its conductor. Sanderling is the son of the famous conductor Kurt Sanderling and has a deep understanding of classical music. Under his leadership, the orchestra has continued to perform at a high level and has attracted new audiences. One of the highlights of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra's recent history was its performance at the 2018 BBC Proms. The orchestra performed a program of works by Richard Strauss, including his famous tone poem "Also sprach Zarathustra." The performance was well-received by critics and helped to raise the orchestra's profile in the UK. The Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra has also been recognized for its recordings. The orchestra has recorded many albums, including works by Beethoven, Brahms, and Tchaikovsky. In 2019, the orchestra's recording of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5 won the International Classical Music Award for Best Orchestral Performance. Today, the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra continues to be one of the most respected orchestras in Europe.
