Isaac Albéniz was a Spanish composer and pianist who is best known for his contributions to the development of Spanish classical music. Born on May 29, 1860, in Camprodon, Catalonia, Albéniz was the son of a customs official and a pianist. His mother recognized his musical talent at an early age and began teaching him piano when he was just four years old. Albéniz's family moved frequently during his childhood, and he received musical training from a variety of teachers in different cities. He made his public debut as a pianist at the age of nine, and by the time he was a teenager, he was performing regularly in concerts throughout Spain. In 1876, Albéniz traveled to Paris to study at the Paris Conservatory. He was initially enrolled in the piano program, but he soon switched to composition. While in Paris, he was exposed to the music of French composers such as Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, as well as the music of Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky. These influences would later be reflected in his own compositions. After completing his studies in Paris, Albéniz returned to Spain and began composing in earnest. He wrote music for the piano, as well as for orchestra and voice. His early works were heavily influenced by the music of Frédéric Chopin, but he soon developed his own unique style that blended Spanish folk music with classical forms. One of Albéniz's most famous works is his suite for piano, Iberia. Composed between 1905 and 1909, Iberia is a collection of twelve pieces that evoke the sights and sounds of Spain. The suite is divided into four books, each of which contains three pieces. The pieces are named after different regions of Spain, such as "Evocación" (Evocation), "El Puerto" (The Port), and "Triana" (a neighborhood in Seville). Iberia is considered one of the greatest works of Spanish classical music, and it has been performed and recorded by many of the world's leading pianists. The suite is notable for its use of Spanish rhythms and melodies, as well as its innovative harmonies and textures. In addition to Iberia, Albéniz wrote many other works for the piano, including his Suite española, which contains eight pieces that are each named after a different region of Spain. The suite was originally composed for piano, but it has been arranged for orchestra and other instruments. Albéniz also wrote several operas, including Pepita Jiménez and Merlin. Pepita Jiménez, which premiered in 1896, is based on a novel by Juan Valera and tells the story of a young seminarian who falls in love with a beautiful widow. The opera was well-received and helped establish Albéniz's reputation as a composer. Merlin, which was left unfinished at the time of Albéniz's death, is based on the legend of King Arthur and the wizard Merlin. The opera was completed by other composers after Albéniz's death and has been performed in various versions. Albéniz's music was not always well-received during his lifetime, as some critics felt that it was too nationalistic and lacked the sophistication of European classical music. However, his music has since been recognized as an important contribution to the development of Spanish classical music. Albéniz died on May 18, 1909, in Cambo-les-Bains, France, at the age of 48. He was buried in the Montjuïc Cemetery in Barcelona, Spain.
