Artist Info
Genre:OperaOrchestralThe Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra is a classical music ensemble based in Bratislava, Slovakia. It was founded in 1929 as the first professional symphony orchestra in Slovakia. The orchestra has since become one of the most prominent orchestras in Central Europe, known for its high-quality performances and recordings. The orchestra's founding can be traced back to the establishment of the Slovak Radio in 1926. The radio station recognized the need for a professional orchestra to perform on its programs and to represent Slovakia in the international music scene. The first conductor of the orchestra was František Dyk, who led the ensemble until 1937. Under his leadership, the orchestra gained a reputation for its excellent performances of both classical and contemporary music. During World War II, the orchestra was disbanded and many of its members were forced to flee the country. After the war, the orchestra was re-established and began to rebuild its reputation. In 1949, the orchestra was renamed the Czechoslovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, reflecting the political changes in the country at the time. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the orchestra continued to perform and record extensively, both in Slovakia and abroad. In 1968, the orchestra was renamed the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, reflecting the country's growing sense of national identity. In the 1970s and 1980s, the orchestra continued to perform and record extensively, under the leadership of conductors such as Ladislav Slovák and Ondrej Lenárd. The orchestra's recordings of the music of Slovak composers such as Eugen Suchoň and Ján Cikker received critical acclaim and helped to promote Slovak music internationally. In the 1990s, the orchestra faced financial difficulties and was forced to reduce its activities. However, it continued to perform and record, and in 1999 it received a major boost when it was selected as the resident orchestra of the Bratislava Music Festival. Since then, the orchestra has continued to perform and record extensively, under the leadership of conductors such as Rastislav Štúr and Mario Kosík. It has also collaborated with many prominent soloists, including violinist Joshua Bell and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Some of the orchestra's most notable performances include its appearances at the Prague Spring Festival, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms. It has also performed with many of the world's leading conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Zubin Mehta, and Sir Simon Rattle. The orchestra has received numerous awards and accolades throughout its history. In 2001, it was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for its recording of the music of Eugen Suchoň. In 2007, it received the Slovak Music Prize for its contribution to the promotion of Slovak music. In 2019, it was awarded the prestigious ECHO Klassik award for its recording of the music of Antonín Dvořák. Today, the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra continues to be one of the leading orchestras in Central Europe, known for its high-quality performances and recordings. Its commitment to promoting Slovak music and culture has helped to establish it as an important cultural institution in Slovakia and beyond.More....
