The Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra (FRSO) is a world-renowned classical music ensemble based in Helsinki, Finland. Founded in 1927, the orchestra has a rich history of excellence in performance and has become one of the most respected orchestras in the world. The FRSO was established as part of the Finnish Broadcasting Company, which was founded in 1926. The orchestra's first conductor was Georg Schnéevoigt, who led the ensemble until 1932. During this time, the FRSO gained a reputation for its high-quality performances and innovative programming. In 1932, the FRSO appointed Toivo Haapanen as its new conductor. Haapanen was a respected conductor and composer, and he led the orchestra for over a decade. Under his leadership, the FRSO continued to grow in stature and became known for its interpretations of Finnish music. During World War II, the FRSO faced many challenges, including a lack of resources and the threat of bombing. Despite these difficulties, the orchestra continued to perform and even gave concerts for soldiers on the front lines. After the war, the FRSO resumed its regular concert schedule and began to tour internationally. In 1957, the FRSO appointed Jukka-Pekka Saraste as its new chief conductor. Saraste was a young and dynamic conductor who brought new energy to the orchestra. Under his leadership, the FRSO continued to expand its repertoire and gained a reputation for its performances of contemporary music. During the 1980s and 1990s, the FRSO continued to thrive under the leadership of conductors such as Leif Segerstam and Sakari Oramo. The orchestra performed at major international festivals and collaborated with some of the world's leading soloists and conductors. In recent years, the FRSO has continued to build on its legacy of excellence. The orchestra's current chief conductor is Hannu Lintu, who took over in 2013. Under Lintu's leadership, the FRSO has continued to push the boundaries of classical music and has gained a reputation for its innovative programming and adventurous performances. One of the highlights of the FRSO's recent history was its performance at the 2015 Proms in London. The orchestra received critical acclaim for its performance of Sibelius's Symphony No. 5, and the concert was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. The FRSO has also received numerous awards and accolades throughout its history. In 2014, the orchestra was awarded the Gramophone Orchestra of the Year award, which is one of the most prestigious awards in classical music. The FRSO has also won several Finnish music awards, including the Emma Award for Best Classical Album. Today, the FRSO continues to be one of the most respected and innovative orchestras in the world. With its rich history and commitment to excellence, the FRSO is sure to continue to inspire audiences for many years to come.
