He was the son of Russell Herbert Gould, a successful furrier, and Florence Emma Gould, a pianist and teacher. Gould showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of three. He was a prodigious talent and quickly became recognized as a child prodigy. Gould's parents recognized his talent and encouraged him to pursue a career in music. He began taking piano lessons with his mother and later studied with Alberto Guerrero, a well-known Canadian pianist. Gould's talent was evident from an early age, and he quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso pianist. In 1955, Gould made his debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4. The performance was a huge success, and Gould quickly became recognized as one of the most talented pianists of his generation. He went on to perform with many of the world's leading orchestras, including the New York Philharmonic, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Gould was known for his unique approach to playing the piano. He was a perfectionist and spent countless hours practicing and refining his technique. He was also known for his unconventional interpretations of classical music. Gould was not afraid to take risks and experiment with different tempos and phrasing, which often led to controversial performances. One of Gould's most famous recordings is his interpretation of Bach's Goldberg Variations. The recording, which was released in 1955, was a groundbreaking achievement and is still considered one of the greatest recordings of all time. Gould's interpretation of the piece was unconventional, with fast tempos and sharp contrasts between the variations. The recording was a huge success and helped to establish Gould as a major figure in the classical music world. Gould continued to perform and record throughout the 1960s and 1970s. He was known for his reclusive nature and often avoided public performances. Instead, he focused on recording and producing music in the studio. Gould was also an accomplished composer and wrote several pieces for piano and other instruments. In 1982, Gould suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. He was forced to retire from performing and spent the rest of his life focusing on his work as a producer and composer. Gould died on October 4, 1982, at the age of 50. Throughout his career, Gould received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 1967 and was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1983. In 1999, the Glenn Gould Foundation was established to promote the study and appreciation of classical music. Glenn Gould was a unique and talented musician who left a lasting impact on the world of classical music. His unconventional approach to playing the piano and his dedication to perfectionism have inspired generations of musicians. Gould's recordings and performances continue to be celebrated and studied by music lovers around the world.More....
