Angela Hewitt is a renowned Canadian classical pianist who has gained international acclaim for her virtuosic performances and recordings of works by Bach, Beethoven, and other composers. Born on July 26, 1958, in Ottawa, Canada, Hewitt began playing the piano at the age of three and showed exceptional talent from an early age. Hewitt's parents were both musicians, and her father was a choral conductor and organist. They recognized their daughter's musical abilities and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Hewitt studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto and later at the University of Ottawa, where she earned a Bachelor of Music degree. In 1978, Hewitt won the Toronto International Bach Piano Competition, which launched her career as a concert pianist. She went on to perform with major orchestras around the world, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Berlin Philharmonic. Hewitt has also given recitals at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. One of Hewitt's most notable achievements is her complete recording of Bach's keyboard works for the Hyperion label. The project took over 11 years to complete and includes 15 CDs. The recordings have been widely praised for their technical brilliance and musical sensitivity, and have won numerous awards, including a Gramophone Award and a Juno Award. Hewitt has also recorded works by other composers, including Beethoven, Mozart, and Schumann. Her recordings of Beethoven's piano sonatas have been particularly well-received, and she has been praised for her ability to bring out the emotional depth and complexity of the music. In addition to her performing and recording career, Hewitt is also a respected teacher and has given masterclasses around the world. She has been a visiting professor at the Royal Academy of Music in London and the Hochschule für Musik in Hannover, Germany. Hewitt has received numerous awards and honors throughout her career. In 2006, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada, one of the country's highest civilian honors. She has also been awarded the Governor General's Performing Arts Award, the Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist Award, and the Wigmore Hall Medal. Despite her success, Hewitt remains dedicated to her craft and continues to push herself to new heights. She has said that her goal is to "play better tomorrow than I did today," and she continues to inspire audiences and musicians around the world with her artistry and passion for music.
