Born on May 14, 1952, in Dillenburg, Germany, Kliegel showed an early interest in music and began playing the cello at the age of six. She received her first lessons from her father, who was a cellist himself. Kliegel's talent was evident from an early age, and she quickly progressed in her studies. Kliegel continued her musical education at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, where she studied with the renowned cellist, Janos Starker.
