He was born into a family of musicians, and his father, Joaquín Cassadó, was a composer and music teacher. Gaspar began his musical training at a young age, studying cello with his father and piano with his mother, Maria Casals. At the age of nine, Gaspar made his debut as a cellist, performing in a concert with his father. He continued to study cello with various teachers, including Pablo Casals, and by the age of 16, he had already established himself as a virtuoso cellist. In 1916, Gaspar moved to Paris to study with the renowned cellist and pedagogue, Maurice Maréchal. While in Paris, he also studied composition with Paul Dukas and Vincent d'Indy. It was during this time that Gaspar began to develop his own unique style as a composer, blending elements of Spanish folk music with the classical tradition. In 1920, Gaspar made his debut as a composer with the premiere of his Suite for Solo Cello. The piece was well-received, and Gaspar began to gain recognition as a composer in addition to his reputation as a cellist. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Gaspar continued to perform as a cellist and compose music. He toured extensively throughout Europe and the United States, performing with some of the most renowned orchestras and conductors of the time. One of Gaspar's most famous works is his Requiebros for Solo Cello, which he composed in 1934. The piece is a virtuosic showpiece for the cello, showcasing Gaspar's technical prowess as a cellist and his ability to blend Spanish folk music with classical forms. Gaspar also composed several works for cello and piano, including his Sonata in C Major for Cello and Piano, which he composed in 1926. The piece is a beautiful example of Gaspar's ability to blend classical forms with Spanish folk music, and it has become a staple of the cello repertoire. In addition to his work as a composer and cellist, Gaspar was also a respected music educator. He taught at the Barcelona Conservatory and the Madrid Conservatory, and he also taught masterclasses throughout Europe and the United States. Gaspar died on December 24, 1966, in Madrid, Spain. He left behind a legacy as one of the most important Spanish composers of the 20th century, and his music continues to be performed and admired by musicians and audiences around the world.More....
