Born on December 24, 1927, in New Hartford, Connecticut, she was the daughter of a music teacher and a church organist. Her parents recognized her musical talent at an early age and encouraged her to pursue a career in music. Stich-Randall began her musical training at the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Connecticut, where she studied voice and piano. She later continued her studies at the Juilliard School in New York City, where she received a Bachelor of Music degree in 1950. During her time at Juilliard, she studied with the renowned voice teacher, Florence Page Kimball. After completing her studies, Stich-Randall made her professional debut in 1951 at the Berkshire Music Festival in Tanglewood, Massachusetts. She quickly gained recognition for her beautiful voice and exceptional musicality, and soon began performing with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras and conductors. One of Stich-Randall's most notable performances was her portrayal of the role of Susanna in Mozart's opera, The Marriage of Figaro. She first performed the role in 1953 at the Glyndebourne Festival in England, and went on to perform it numerous times throughout her career. Her interpretation of the role was praised for its charm, wit, and vocal agility. Stich-Randall also had a successful career as a concert singer, performing with many of the world's leading orchestras. She was particularly renowned for her performances of Bach's sacred music, and was often praised for her clear, pure tone and impeccable phrasing. Throughout her career, Stich-Randall received numerous awards and honors for her contributions to the world of classical music. In 1956, she was awarded the prestigious Harriet Cohen International Music Award, which recognized her as one of the most promising young musicians of her generation. She was also awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1977, in recognition of her contributions to German music. Despite her success, Stich-Randall was known for her modesty and humility. She was deeply committed to her craft, and was known for her tireless work ethic and dedication to her art. She was also known for her generosity and kindness, and was beloved by her colleagues and fans alike. Stich-Randall's career was tragically cut short when she was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in the early 1970s. Despite her illness, she continued to perform and record, and remained an inspiration to many in the classical music world. She passed away on July 17, 2007, at the age of 79. Today, Stich-Randall is remembered as one of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century.
