The orchestra's founding was a significant event in the cultural history of Slovakia. It was established with the aim of promoting classical music and nurturing young talents in the country. The orchestra's first conductor was Bystrik Rezucha, who was a prominent Slovak conductor and composer. Under his leadership, the orchestra quickly gained recognition for its high-quality performances and became one of the leading orchestras in Central Europe. Over the years, the Czecho-Slovak State Philharmonic Orchestra (Kosice) has had many talented musicians as its members. Some of the notable members of the orchestra include the violinist Peter Michalica, the cellist Jozef Luptak, and the pianist Marian Lapšanský. One of the highlights of the orchestra's performances was its participation in the Prague Spring International Music Festival in 1970. The orchestra also performed at the Salzburg Festival in 1972, where it received a standing ovation from the audience.
