Born on May 22, 1944, in Levanger, Norway, Haugland grew up in a musical family and began singing at a young age. He studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo, where he honed his vocal skills and developed a deep love for classical music. Haugland made his professional debut in 1971, singing the role of Colline in Puccini's "La Bohème" at the Norwegian National Opera. He quickly gained recognition for his rich, resonant voice and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. Over the next few years, he performed in a variety of operas and concerts throughout Norway and Europe, building a reputation as one of the most talented bass-baritones of his generation. In 1976, Haugland made his debut at the Royal Opera House in London, singing the role of Fasolt in Wagner's "Das Rheingold." The performance was a critical and commercial success, and Haugland was praised for his powerful voice and his ability to convey the character's complex emotions. He went on to perform at the Royal Opera House in several other productions, including "Don Giovanni," "The Marriage of Figaro," and "The Magic Flute." Haugland's international career continued to flourish throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He performed at some of the world's most prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Paris Opera, and the Vienna State Opera. He also appeared in numerous concerts and recitals, showcasing his versatility as a performer and his deep understanding of classical music. One of Haugland's most memorable performances was his portrayal of Wotan in Wagner's "Ring" cycle at the Bayreuth Festival in Germany. The role of Wotan is one of the most demanding in all of opera, requiring a singer to convey a wide range of emotions and to sing for hours on end. Haugland's performance was widely praised for its power and intensity, and it cemented his reputation as one of the greatest bass-baritones of his time. Throughout his career, Haugland received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1988, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of St. Olav, one of Norway's highest honors. He was also awarded the Grieg Prize in 1993, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Norwegian music. Haugland's career was tragically cut short when he passed away on November 16, 2000, at the age of 56. His death was a great loss to the world of classical music, but his legacy lives on through his recordings and the memories of those who were fortunate enough to see him perform. Haugland was a true master of his craft, and his contributions to the world of opera will be remembered for generations to come.More....
