Born on September 21, 1949, in Copenhagen, Denmark, Elming grew up in a family of musicians. His father was a violinist, and his mother was a pianist. From a young age, Elming showed a keen interest in music and began singing in the church choir. Elming's musical education began at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, where he studied under the tutelage of Aksel Schiotz. He later continued his studies in Vienna with Erik Werba and in London with Vera Rozsa. Elming's talent was evident from the start, and he quickly gained recognition as a promising young tenor. Elming made his professional debut in 1976 at the Royal Danish Opera, where he performed the role of Tamino in Mozart's "The Magic Flute." This performance marked the beginning of a long and successful career for Elming. He went on to perform in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and the Paris Opera. One of Elming's most notable performances was his portrayal of Siegmund in Wagner's "Die Walkure" at the Bayreuth Festival in 1985. This performance was widely acclaimed, and Elming was praised for his powerful and emotional interpretation of the role. He went on to perform in many other Wagnerian operas, including "Tristan und Isolde" and "Parsifal." Elming's repertoire also included many other operas, such as Verdi's "Otello," Puccini's "La Boheme," and Bizet's "Carmen." Throughout his career, Elming received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1991, he was awarded the Order of the Dannebrog, one of Denmark's highest honors, for his services to music. He was also awarded the title of Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 2001.
