Composer:Frederick DeliusGenre:OperaStyle:OperaCompose Date:1910Average_duration:78:54Fennimore and Gerda is an opera composed by Frederick Delius, with a libretto by Philip Heseltine. The opera was composed between 1908 and 1910, and premiered on October 15, 1919, at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London. The plot of the opera is based on a Danish fairy tale, "The White Shield," and tells the story of Fennimore, a young woman who is kidnapped by a group of robbers and taken to their hideout in the forest. There, she meets Gerda, the daughter of the robbers' leader, who falls in love with Fennimore. Fennimore, however, is in love with a young man named Olof, who is searching for her in the forest. The opera follows the love triangle between Fennimore, Gerda, and Olof, as well as the conflict between the robbers and the villagers who are searching for Fennimore. The opera is divided into three movements, each of which is further divided into several scenes. The first movement, "The Robbers' Lair," introduces the characters and sets up the conflict between the robbers and the villagers. The second movement, "The Forest," follows Olof's search for Fennimore and the growing love between Fennimore and Gerda. The final movement, "The Village," resolves the conflict between the robbers and the villagers and brings the love triangle to a tragic conclusion. One of the characteristics of Delius's music in Fennimore and Gerda is his use of impressionistic harmonies and orchestration. The music is often dreamlike and atmospheric, with lush, sweeping melodies and richly textured harmonies. Delius also incorporates elements of Danish folk music into the score, giving the opera a distinctly Nordic flavor. Despite its initial critical reception, Fennimore and Gerda has become one of Delius's most popular operas, and is frequently performed today. Its lush, romantic music and timeless fairy tale plot continue to captivate audiences over a century after its premiere.More....
