The English National Opera Chorus is a renowned classical music artist that has been captivating audiences for over four decades. The chorus was founded in 1974 as part of the English National Opera (ENO), one of the leading opera companies in the United Kingdom. Since its inception, the chorus has played a vital role in the success of the ENO, providing the vocal backbone for some of the most memorable productions in the company's history. The birth of the English National Opera Chorus can be traced back to the early 1970s when the ENO was looking to establish a permanent chorus. Prior to this, the company had relied on freelance singers for its productions, which made it difficult to maintain consistency in the quality of the vocal performances. The decision to create a permanent chorus was a bold move, but one that has paid off handsomely over the years. The first conductor of the ENO Chorus was Mark Elder, who led the group from 1974 to 1979. Under his leadership, the chorus quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with, delivering powerful and emotive performances that left audiences spellbound. One of the highlights of this period was the chorus's performance in the ENO's production of Verdi's "Aida" in 1977, which was widely acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. In 1979, the baton was passed to David Atherton, who led the ENO Chorus for the next 15 years. During this time, the chorus continued to go from strength to strength, delivering memorable performances in productions such as "The Marriage of Figaro," "Don Giovanni," and "The Magic Flute." One of the standout moments of this period was the chorus's performance in the ENO's production of "The Ring Cycle" in 1984, which was widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in the company's history. In 1994, Paul Daniel took over as conductor of the ENO Chorus, a position he held until 2002. Under his leadership, the chorus continued to excel, delivering powerful and nuanced performances in productions such as "La Bohème," "Carmen," and "The Barber of Seville." One of the highlights of this period was the chorus's performance in the ENO's production of "The Mikado" in 1995, which was widely praised for its energy and wit. In 2002, the baton was passed to Martin Fitzpatrick, who led the ENO Chorus for the next 10 years. During this time, the chorus continued to deliver outstanding performances in productions such as "The Magic Flute," "The Marriage of Figaro," and "The Barber of Seville." One of the standout moments of this period was the chorus's performance in the ENO's production of "The Damnation of Faust" in 2006, which was widely regarded as one of the most powerful and moving productions in the company's history. In 2012, the ENO Chorus welcomed a new conductor, James Henshaw, who has continued to build on the chorus's legacy of excellence. Under his leadership, the chorus has delivered memorable performances in productions such as "The Pirates of Penzance," "The Mikado," and "The Marriage of Figaro." One of the highlights of this period was the chorus's performance in the ENO's production of "The Magic Flute" in 2013, which was widely praised for its energy and creativity. Over the years, the ENO Chorus has received numerous awards and accolades for its outstanding performances.
