He was born into a family of musicians, and his father was a cellist who played in the Paris Opera Orchestra. Fournier began playing the cello at the age of six, and he received his first lessons from his father. Fournier's talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly became a prodigy. He made his debut performance at the age of ten, and he was soon performing in concerts throughout Europe. In 1923, Fournier won first prize at the Paris Conservatory, and he continued to study there for several years. In the 1930s, Fournier began to establish himself as one of the leading cellists of his generation. He performed with many of the world's top orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the London Symphony Orchestra. He also collaborated with many of the leading conductors of the time, including Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan, and Otto Klemperer. One of Fournier's most famous performances was his recording of Bach's six suites for solo cello. This recording, which was made in the 1950s, is still considered one of the definitive interpretations of this music. Fournier's playing was characterized by its purity of tone, its technical precision, and its emotional depth. Fournier was also known for his work as a chamber musician. He was a founding member of the Trio Pasquier, which was one of the leading piano trios of the mid-20th century. He also performed with many other chamber groups, including the Amadeus Quartet and the Griller Quartet. Throughout his career, Fournier received many awards and honors. In 1956, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of the Bach suites. He was also awarded the Legion of Honor, which is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a French citizen. Fournier continued to perform and record well into his seventies. He died on January 8, 1986, in Geneva, Switzerland, at the age of 79. His legacy as one of the greatest cellists of the 20th century lives on through his recordings and the many musicians who have been inspired by his playing.More....
