Wilhelm Kempff was a renowned German pianist and composer who was born on November 25, 1895, in JĂĽterbog, Germany. He was the son of a church musician and began playing the piano at a young age. Kempff's father was his first teacher, and he later studied with Karl Heinrich Barth, a renowned pianist and composer. Kempff's talent was evident from a young age, and he made his public debut at the age of nine. He continued to perform throughout his childhood and teenage years, and in 1914, he enrolled at the Berlin Hochschule fĂĽr Musik to study with the famous pianist and composer Ferruccio Busoni. During World War I, Kempff served in the German army, but he continued to play the piano whenever he could. After the war, he resumed his studies with Busoni and began to establish himself as a concert pianist. In 1920, he made his debut in Berlin, and his performance was met with critical acclaim.
