Born in 1964 in London, England, Filsell showed an early interest in music and began playing the piano at the age of five. He went on to study at the Royal College of Music in London, where he earned a Bachelor of Music degree with honors. Filsell's talent as a pianist was quickly recognized, and he began performing in public at a young age. In 1984, he won first prize in the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition, which helped to launch his career as a professional musician.
