The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (RLPO) is a world-renowned classical music ensemble based in Liverpool, England. Founded in 1840, the orchestra has a rich history and has become one of the most respected and celebrated orchestras in the world. The RLPO was founded by a group of Liverpool music lovers who wanted to establish a professional orchestra in the city. The orchestra's first concert was held on March 12, 1840, and was conducted by John Russell. The concert was a great success, and the orchestra quickly gained a reputation for excellence. Over the years, the RLPO has had many distinguished conductors, including Sir Charles Hallé, Sir Malcolm Sargent, and Sir John Pritchard. In 1980, the orchestra appointed its first female conductor, Jane Glover, and in 2006, Vasily Petrenko became the orchestra's youngest-ever principal conductor. The RLPO has a core of around 90 musicians, and its repertoire includes a wide range of classical music, from Baroque to contemporary. The orchestra has performed with many of the world's leading soloists, including Yehudi Menuhin, Jacqueline du Pré, and Martha Argerich. One of the highlights of the RLPO's history was its performance at the opening ceremony of the Liverpool Cathedral in 1978. The orchestra performed Benjamin Britten's War Requiem, which was conducted by Sir Charles Groves. The performance was broadcast live on television and was watched by millions of people around the world. The RLPO has also won many awards and accolades over the years. In 2008, the orchestra won the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award for Best Ensemble. The orchestra has also been nominated for several Grammy Awards, and in 2015, it won the Gramophone Award for Best Orchestral Recording for its recording of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5. In addition to its regular concert series, the RLPO is also involved in a wide range of community and educational projects. The orchestra runs a youth orchestra, a community choir, and a music therapy program for people with dementia. The RLPO has also been involved in many collaborations with other artists and organizations. In 2018, the orchestra collaborated with the Royal Shakespeare Company to create a new production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, which featured music by Mendelssohn and was conducted by Vasily Petrenko. Overall, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra is a world-class ensemble with a rich history and a commitment to excellence in classical music. Its performances and recordings have won critical acclaim, and its community and educational projects have made a significant impact on the cultural life of Liverpool and beyond.
