Anthony Goldstone was a renowned classical music artist who was born on May 5, 1944, in Liverpool, England. He was a pianist, composer, and musicologist who had a passion for classical music from a young age. His parents were both amateur musicians, and they encouraged him to pursue his interest in music. Goldstone began his musical education at the age of six when he started taking piano lessons. He showed great talent and dedication, and by the age of 11, he had won a scholarship to study at the Royal Manchester College of Music. He continued his studies there for six years, during which time he won several awards and prizes for his performances. After completing his studies at the Royal Manchester College of Music, Goldstone went on to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. There, he studied with renowned pianists such as Kendall Taylor and Gordon Green. He also studied composition with Richard Rodney Bennett and Lennox Berkeley. Goldstone's career as a professional musician began in the early 1970s when he started performing in concerts and recitals. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and versatile pianist who was equally at home playing classical and contemporary music. He performed extensively throughout the UK and Europe, and he also toured in the United States, Canada, and Australia. One of the highlights of Goldstone's career was his performance of Franz Liszt's complete piano music. This was a monumental undertaking that took him several years to complete. He performed the entire cycle of Liszt's piano music in a series of concerts that were widely acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. Goldstone was also known for his performances of the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff. He was one of the few pianists who could play Rachmaninoff's notoriously difficult piano concertos with ease. He recorded several of Rachmaninoff's works, including his piano concertos, for various record labels. In addition to his career as a performer, Goldstone was also a respected musicologist. He wrote several books on music, including a biography of Franz Liszt and a study of the music of Sergei Rachmaninoff. He was also a regular contributor to music journals and magazines. Goldstone received several awards and honors throughout his career. In 1994, he was awarded the Medal of Honor by the Franz Liszt Society in Budapest, Hungary, in recognition of his contributions to the study and performance of Liszt's music. He was also awarded the Medal of Honor by the Rachmaninoff Society in Moscow, Russia, in 2003. Sadly, Goldstone passed away on January 2, 2017, at the age of 72. He left behind a legacy of outstanding performances, recordings, and scholarship that continue to inspire and delight music lovers around the world.
