The ensemble was founded in 1985 by a group of young musicians who shared a passion for historically informed performance practice. The founding members of Concerto Köln were Werner Ehrhardt, Markus Hoffmann, and Peter Schmitz. They were all graduates of the Cologne Conservatory and had a deep interest in Baroque and Classical music. They wanted to create an ensemble that would explore the music of these periods in a historically informed way, using period instruments and playing techniques. The ensemble quickly gained a reputation for its outstanding performances and innovative programming. The ensemble has appeared at the Salzburg Festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, the BBC Proms, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, among others. One of the highlights of Concerto Köln's career was its performance at the opening ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The ensemble performed a specially commissioned piece by Italian composer Luca Francesconi, which was broadcast to millions of viewers around the world. Concerto Köln has also received numerous awards and accolades for its performances and recordings. The ensemble has won several Echo Klassik awards, which are among the most prestigious awards in the classical music industry.
