Carl Heinrich Graun was a German composer and singer who was born on May 7, 1704, in Wahrenbrück, Brandenburg. He was the son of a musician and received his early musical training from his father. Graun's talent was evident from a young age, and he quickly became a skilled singer and instrumentalist. Graun's musical career began in earnest when he joined the choir of the Dresden Court Chapel in 1726. He quickly rose through the ranks and became a soloist in the choir. During his time in Dresden, Graun also studied composition with Johann Christoph Schmidt, the court composer. In 1735, Graun left Dresden to become the Kapellmeister at the court of Frederick the Great in Berlin. This was a significant appointment for Graun, as Frederick was a great lover of music and had a reputation for being a demanding patron. Graun rose to the challenge, however, and quickly established himself as one of the leading composers of his time. Graun's music was characterized by its elegance, lyricism, and emotional depth. He was particularly skilled at writing vocal music, and his operas and oratorios were highly regarded. Some of his most famous works include the operas "Montezuma," "Cleopatra e Cesare," and "Il Mithridate," as well as the oratorios "Der Tod Jesu" and "Weihnachtsoratorium." Graun was also a prolific composer of instrumental music, including concertos, sonatas, and chamber music. His instrumental works were notable for their virtuosity and technical demands, and they were often performed by some of the leading musicians of the day. In addition to his work as a composer, Graun was also a respected singing teacher. He taught at the Royal Opera School in Berlin and had a number of famous pupils, including the soprano Johannette Zomer and the tenor Johann Christoph Schmidt. Graun's career was not without its challenges, however. In 1759, he suffered a stroke that left him partially paralyzed and unable to compose. He continued to teach, however, and remained a respected figure in the musical world until his death on August 8, 1759. Despite his relatively short life, Carl Heinrich Graun left a lasting legacy in the world of classical music. His music was highly regarded during his lifetime and continues to be performed and recorded today. Graun's influence can be heard in the works of many later composers, including Mozart and Beethoven, and his contributions to the development of opera and vocal music are still celebrated by musicians and music lovers around the world.
