He was the youngest of ten children born to a Jewish family. His father was a cattle dealer, and his mother was a homemaker. Schmidt showed an early interest in music and began singing in the synagogue choir at the age of seven. He received his formal music education at the Czernowitz Conservatory, where he studied under the tutelage of Professor Iosif Schmidt (no relation). He made his professional debut in 1924 at the Municipal Theater in Czernowitz, where he sang the role of Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata. In 1929, Schmidt was discovered by the famous conductor Bruno Walter, who was visiting Czernowitz. Walter was impressed by Schmidt's voice and invited him to audition for the Berlin State Opera. Schmidt traveled to Berlin and sang for Walter, who immediately offered him a contract. Schmidt made his debut at the Berlin State Opera in 1929, singing the role of Tamino in Mozart's The Magic Flute. Schmidt's career took off after his debut in Berlin. He quickly became one of the most popular tenors in Europe, known for his beautiful voice and charismatic stage presence. He performed in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Vienna State Opera, the Paris Opera, and the Royal Opera House in London. One of Schmidt's most famous performances was his portrayal of Don Ottavio in Mozart's Don Giovanni at the Salzburg Festival in 1934. His performance was widely praised, and he became known as one of the greatest interpreters of Mozart's music. He also performed in many operas by other composers, including Verdi, Puccini, and Wagner. In addition to his opera performances, Schmidt was also a popular concert singer. He performed in many concerts throughout Europe, singing a wide range of music, from classical to popular songs. He was known for his ability to connect with his audience and for his emotional performances. Schmidt's career was cut short by the outbreak of World War II. As a Jew, he was forced to flee Germany and Austria and eventually settled in Switzerland. He continued to perform in concerts and on the radio, but he was unable to perform in opera due to the war. He also recorded many songs during this time, which became popular throughout Europe. Tragically, Schmidt's life was cut short at the age of 38. In 1942, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and underwent surgery. Although the surgery was successful, he suffered a fatal heart attack a few days later. He died on November 16, 1942, in Gstaad, Switzerland. Despite his short career, Schmidt left a lasting legacy in the world of classical music. He was known for his beautiful voice, his emotional performances, and his ability to connect with his audience. He was also a pioneer in the world of recorded music, recording many songs that became popular throughout Europe. Today, he is remembered as one of the greatest tenors of the 20th century.More....
