Caterina Valente was born on January 14, 1931, in Paris, France. She was the daughter of an Italian accordionist and a French singer, and grew up in a musical family. Her parents were both performers, and she began singing and dancing at a young age. Valente's family moved to Germany during World War II, and she began performing in nightclubs and on radio shows. She quickly gained popularity for her singing and dancing skills, and was soon signed to a record label. In the 1950s, Valente became a major star in Europe, with hits such as "Malaguena" and "The Breeze and I." She also began performing in films, including the 1954 musical "Bonjour Kathrin." Valente's success continued throughout the 1960s, with hits such as "Istanbul" and "La Paloma." She also began performing in the United States, appearing on television shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Dean Martin Show." Valente was known for her multilingual singing abilities, and could perform in several languages, including German, French, Italian, Spanish, and English. She was also a skilled dancer, and often incorporated dance into her performances. Valente received several awards throughout her career, including the Order of Merit of Berlin, the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
