Orfeo is an opera composed by Carl Heinrich Graun, a German composer, in 1752. The opera is based on the Greek myth of Orpheus, a musician who travels to the underworld to retrieve his beloved wife, Eurydice. The libretto was written by Johann Joachim Eschenburg. The opera premiered on October 6, 1752, at the Royal Opera in Berlin. It was an immediate success and was performed numerous times throughout Europe. The opera is divided into three acts and features a cast of six principal singers. The first act opens with Orfeo mourning the loss of his wife, Eurydice. He decides to travel to the underworld to retrieve her. In the second act, Orfeo arrives in the underworld and sings to the spirits, convincing them to allow him to see Eurydice. He finds her and they begin to make their way back to the world of the living. However, Orfeo is warned not to look back at Eurydice until they have left the underworld. In the final act, Orfeo cannot resist the urge to look back and loses Eurydice forever. The music of Orfeo is characterized by its lyrical melodies and expressive harmonies. Graun's use of the orchestra is particularly noteworthy, with the strings providing a rich and emotional backdrop to the vocal lines. The opera also features several virtuosic arias, showcasing the talents of the singers. Orfeo is considered one of Graun's most important works and is a significant example of the German opera of the mid-18th century. Its popularity led to numerous adaptations and translations, including a French version by Christoph Willibald Gluck. Today, Orfeo remains a beloved and frequently performed opera, showcasing Graun's skill as a composer and his ability to bring the myth of Orpheus to life on the operatic stage.
