Yuli Turovsky was a renowned classical music artist who was born on August 17, 1939, in Moscow, Russia. He was a cellist, conductor, and founder of the chamber orchestra I Musici de Montréal. Turovsky was known for his exceptional talent and his contributions to the world of classical music. Turovsky began his musical journey at a young age, studying cello at the Moscow Conservatory. He was a prodigious talent and quickly gained recognition for his skills. In 1963, he won first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, which launched his career as a professional musician. After his success at the Tchaikovsky Competition, Turovsky began performing as a soloist with various orchestras around the world. He also became a member of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, where he played for several years before moving to Canada in 1976. In Canada, Turovsky continued to perform as a soloist and also began conducting. He founded the chamber orchestra I Musici de Montréal in 1983, which quickly gained a reputation for its high-quality performances. Under Turovsky's leadership, the orchestra became one of the most respected chamber ensembles in the world. Turovsky's career was marked by numerous highlights and achievements. He performed as a soloist with some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the New York Philharmonic. He also conducted many orchestras, including the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. In addition to his performances, Turovsky was also a prolific recording artist. He recorded over 100 albums, many of which received critical acclaim. His recordings of the complete works of Bach for cello and the complete works of Shostakovich for string quartet are considered some of the best recordings of these works. Turovsky's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 2001, one of the country's highest honors. He also received the Prix Denise-Pelletier, the highest honor for the arts in Quebec, in 2003. Despite his many achievements, Turovsky remained humble and dedicated to his craft.
