CanadaBirth:1948Period:ContemporaryGenre:ChamberConcertoMarjan Mozetich is a Canadian composer of classical music who was born on January 7, 1948, in Gorizia, Italy. He grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, where he began his musical studies at an early age. Mozetich's parents were both musicians, and his father was a violinist in the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. This early exposure to music had a profound impact on Mozetich, and he began composing his own music at the age of 12. Mozetich attended the University of Toronto, where he studied composition with John Weinzweig and piano with William Aide. He received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1971 and went on to complete his Master of Music degree in 1973. During his time at the University of Toronto, Mozetich was heavily influenced by the music of Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, as well as the minimalist music of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. Mozetich's early works were characterized by their use of minimalist techniques, such as repetition and gradual transformation. His breakthrough work was "Fantasia for Piano and Orchestra," which was premiered by the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra in 1976. This work showcased Mozetich's unique style, which combined minimalist techniques with lush, romantic harmonies and melodies. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Mozetich continued to compose works that were highly regarded by critics and audiences alike. His works during this period included "Affairs of the Heart" (1982), "The Passion of Angels" (1992), and "Postcards from the Sky" (1997). These works showcased Mozetich's ability to create music that was both accessible and emotionally powerful. In 2000, Mozetich composed "Lament in the Trampled Garden," which was commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. This work was inspired by the events of September 11, 2001, and was a deeply personal response to the tragedy. "Lament in the Trampled Garden" was widely praised for its emotional depth and its ability to capture the feelings of grief and loss that were felt by so many in the wake of the attacks. Mozetich's most famous work is "Affairs of the Heart," which was composed in 1982. This work is a concerto for harp and orchestra and has become a staple of the harp repertoire. "Affairs of the Heart" is characterized by its lush, romantic melodies and its use of minimalist techniques. The work has been performed by many of the world's leading harpists, including Judy Loman, Erica Goodman, and Yolanda Kondonassis. Another notable work by Mozetich is "The Passion of Angels," which was composed in 1992. This work is a concerto for two harps and orchestra and was commissioned by the CBC Radio Orchestra. "The Passion of Angels" is characterized by its use of lush, romantic harmonies and its intricate interplay between the two harps. The work has been performed by many of the world's leading harp duos, including the Duo Scorpio and the Harp Twins. Mozetich's music has been performed by many of the world's leading orchestras, including the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. His works have also been performed by many of the world's leading soloists, including pianist Anton Kuerti, cellist Shauna Rolston, and violinist Lara St. John. In addition to his work as a composer, Mozetich has also been a highly respected teacher. He has taught composition at the University of Toronto, the Royal Conservatory of Music, and the University of Western Ontario.More....
