The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO) is a classical music ensemble based in Wellington, New Zealand. It was founded in 1946 and has since become one of the country's most prominent cultural institutions. The NZSO was established by a group of music enthusiasts who recognized the need for a professional orchestra in New Zealand. The group was led by conductor Warwick Braithwaite, who had previously worked with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London. Braithwaite was appointed as the NZSO's first chief conductor and led the orchestra for its first six years. Over the years, the NZSO has had many notable members, including conductors James Judd, Pietari Inkinen, and Edo de Waart. The orchestra's current music director is Hamish McKeich, who was appointed in 2016. The NZSO has performed extensively both in New Zealand and internationally. Some of its most notable performances include a tour of China in 2015, where it performed in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, and a performance at the BBC Proms in London in 2016. The NZSO has also collaborated with many renowned musicians and composers, including Yo-Yo Ma, Lang Lang, and John Williams. In 2019, the orchestra performed the world premiere of a new work by New Zealand composer Salina Fisher, which was commissioned by the NZSO. The NZSO has received numerous awards and accolades over the years. In 2005, it was awarded the Arts Foundation of New Zealand Icon Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to New Zealand's cultural heritage. The orchestra has also won several New Zealand Music Awards, including Best Classical Album in 2018 for its recording of works by New Zealand composer John Psathas. In addition to its performances, the NZSO is also committed to music education and outreach. It runs a range of programs for young musicians, including the National Youth Orchestra and the NZSO National Youth Orchestra Academy. The orchestra also performs regularly in schools and community venues throughout New Zealand. Overall, the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra has played a significant role in the development of classical music in New Zealand. Its commitment to excellence and innovation has earned it a reputation as one of the country's most important cultural institutions.
