New ZealandBirth:October 7, 1944 in Te ArohaJack Body was a renowned New Zealand composer who made significant contributions to the world of classical music. He was born on March 7, 1944, in Te Aroha, a small town in the Waikato region of New Zealand. Body's parents were both musicians, and he grew up in a musical household. His father was a pianist, and his mother was a singer, and they encouraged their son's interest in music from an early age. Body began his formal music education at the University of Auckland, where he studied composition with Douglas Lilburn, one of New Zealand's most prominent composers. After completing his undergraduate degree, Body went on to study at the University of York in England, where he earned a Ph.D. in composition. Throughout his career, Body was known for his eclectic style, which drew on a wide range of musical traditions and influences. He was particularly interested in the music of Asia, and he spent a significant amount of time traveling and studying in countries such as China, Indonesia, and Thailand. This interest in non-Western music is evident in many of his compositions, which often incorporate elements of traditional Asian music. One of Body's most significant works is his opera "Passion," which was first performed in 1999. The opera is based on the story of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, but it incorporates elements of traditional Balinese music and dance. The opera was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish Body as one of New Zealand's most important composers. Another notable work by Body is his "Five Lullabies," which was composed in 1987. The piece is a collection of five songs, each of which is based on a traditional lullaby from a different country. The songs are sung in the original languages, and the piece is accompanied by a small ensemble of instruments. "Five Lullabies" has been performed around the world and is considered one of Body's most accessible and popular works. In addition to his work as a composer, Body was also a respected music educator. He taught at the University of Auckland for many years and was known for his innovative and engaging teaching style. Many of his students went on to become successful composers and performers in their own right. Body's contributions to the world of classical music were recognized with numerous awards and honors. He was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2001 and was awarded the Arts Foundation of New Zealand's Icon Award in 2009. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand and a member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Sadly, Jack Body passed away on May 10, 2015, at the age of 71. His death was a great loss to the world of classical music, but his legacy lives on through his compositions and the many musicians he inspired and taught over the years. Body's eclectic style and his willingness to explore and incorporate non-Western musical traditions continue to influence and inspire composers around the world.More....
