Rainforest is a contemporary music composition by New Zealand composer Jack Body. It was composed in 1973 and premiered in Wellington, New Zealand in the same year. The composition is a tribute to the sounds of the rainforest and is scored for six percussionists playing a variety of instruments, including gongs, marimbas, and bamboo pipes. Rainforest is divided into three movements, each of which explores a different aspect of the rainforest. The first movement, titled "Canopy," is characterized by the use of high-pitched instruments, such as the piccolo and the glockenspiel, to evoke the sounds of birds and insects in the treetops. The second movement, "Understory," features the use of lower-pitched instruments, such as the marimba and the bass drum, to create a sense of the dense vegetation and undergrowth of the rainforest. The final movement, "Forest Floor," is characterized by the use of percussive instruments, such as the woodblock and the cowbell, to evoke the sounds of animals and insects on the forest floor. One of the unique characteristics of Rainforest is its use of spatialization. The six percussionists are positioned around the performance space, with each player assigned a specific set of instruments. This creates a sense of immersion for the listener, as the sounds of the rainforest seem to surround them from all directions. Overall, Rainforest is a highly evocative and immersive composition that captures the sounds and atmosphere of the rainforest. Its use of spatialization and diverse range of percussion instruments make it a unique and engaging listening experience.
