London Baroque is a renowned classical music ensemble that has been captivating audiences with its exceptional performances for over four decades. The ensemble was founded in 1978 by a group of musicians who shared a passion for early music and a desire to explore the rich repertoire of the Baroque era. The founding members of London Baroque were Ingrid Seifert (violin), Richard Gwilt (violin), Charles Medlam (viola da gamba), and Terence Charlston (harpsichord). They were soon joined by other talented musicians, including violinist Rachel Isserlis, flautist Stephen Preston, and cellist Richard Tunnicliffe. From the outset, London Baroque set out to explore the music of the Baroque era in a historically informed manner. This meant using period instruments and playing techniques to recreate the sound and style of the music as it would have been heard in the 17th and 18th centuries. Over the years, London Baroque has become known for its exceptional musicianship and its ability to bring the music of the Baroque era to life. The ensemble has performed at major concert halls and festivals around the world, including the Wigmore Hall in London, the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, and the Boston Early Music Festival. One of the highlights of London Baroque's career was its performance of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos at the BBC Proms in 1993. The ensemble's performance was widely praised for its energy, precision, and musicality, and it helped to cement London Baroque's reputation as one of the leading Baroque ensembles of its time. London Baroque has also recorded extensively, with over 50 albums to its name. Its recordings have received critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the Gramophone Award for Best Baroque Instrumental Recording in 1995 for its recording of Biber's Mystery Sonatas. The ensemble's current members include violinists Richard Gwilt and Huw Daniel, viola da gamba player Charles Medlam, and harpsichordist Steven Devine. They continue to explore the rich repertoire of the Baroque era, bringing their passion and expertise to audiences around the world. In addition to its performances and recordings, London Baroque is also committed to education and outreach. The ensemble regularly gives masterclasses and workshops, and it has worked with young musicians through its London Baroque Academy. London Baroque's commitment to historically informed performance and its exceptional musicianship have made it one of the most respected and admired Baroque ensembles in the world. Its legacy continues to inspire and delight audiences, and its contributions to the world of early music will be remembered for generations to come.
