Medlam's talent as a cellist was widely recognized, and he received numerous awards and accolades throughout his career. In 1973, he was awarded the prestigious Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service in the Field of Music. He was also awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1995 for his services to music. In addition to his work as a cellist, Medlam was also a respected music educator.
