Jesús López-Cobos was a renowned Spanish conductor who made a significant contribution to the world of classical music. He was born on February 25, 1940, in Toro, a small town in the province of Zamora, Spain. His father was a doctor, and his mother was a pianist. López-Cobos grew up in a musical family, and his mother played a significant role in his early musical education. López-Cobos began his musical studies at the age of five, learning to play the piano and violin. He later studied at the Madrid Royal Conservatory, where he focused on conducting. After completing his studies, he began his career as a conductor in Spain, working with various orchestras and opera companies. In 1968, López-Cobos made his international debut as a conductor, leading the Spanish National Orchestra in a performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in Vienna. This performance was a significant milestone in his career, and it led to many more opportunities to conduct in Europe and the United States. Throughout his career, López-Cobos conducted some of the world's most prestigious orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He was also a regular guest conductor at the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the Royal Opera House in London. One of López-Cobos's most significant achievements was his tenure as the music director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra from 1986 to 2001. During his time in Cincinnati, he transformed the orchestra into one of the finest in the United States, earning critical acclaim for his performances and recordings. He also led the orchestra on several international tours, including a historic trip to China in 1995. López-Cobos was also a prolific recording artist, with over 200 recordings to his name. He recorded extensively with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, as well as with other orchestras and opera companies around the world. His recordings of the works of Spanish composers, including Manuel de Falla and Joaquín Rodrigo, were particularly acclaimed. Throughout his career, López-Cobos received numerous awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1981, he was awarded the Gold Medal of Fine Arts by the Spanish government, and in 1991, he was made an honorary member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He was also awarded the National Prize for Music in Spain in 1989 and the Prince of Asturias Award for the Arts in 2001.
