Born on August 28, 1955, in Frankfurt, Germany, Schneider showed an early interest in music and began playing the recorder at the age of six. He later went on to study music at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, where he specialized in the recorder and historical performance practice. Schneider's career as a musician began in the early 1980s when he joined the ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln, led by the renowned conductor and harpsichordist, Reinhard Goebel. With Musica Antiqua Köln, Schneider performed extensively throughout Europe and the United States, gaining a reputation as one of the leading recorder players of his generation. In 1987, Schneider left Musica Antiqua Köln to pursue a solo career, and since then, he has performed with some of the world's leading orchestras and ensembles, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the English Baroque Soloists, and the Academy of Ancient Music. He has also collaborated with many renowned conductors, including Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, and Philippe Herreweghe. One of the highlights of Schneider's career was his performance at the 1994 Salzburg Festival, where he played the recorder in a production of Handel's opera, "Giulio Cesare." The production was directed by the renowned French director, Luc Bondy, and was widely acclaimed for its innovative staging and musical interpretation. Schneider has also been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout his career. In 1991, he was awarded the prestigious Echo Klassik award for his recording of Telemann's "Tafelmusik." He has also been awarded the Diapason d'Or, the Gramophone Award, and the Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, among others. In addition to his work as a performer, Schneider is also a respected musicologist and has published several books and articles on the history and performance practice of early music. He has also served as a professor of recorder and historical performance practice at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts since 1992. Schneider's contribution to the world of classical music has been significant, and his performances and recordings have helped to bring the music of the Baroque and Renaissance periods to a wider audience.
