He was born in Milan, Italy, into a family of musicians. His father, Alexis Saint-Martin, was a French oboist who had settled in Milan, and his mother was Italian. Giuseppe was the second of three brothers who all became musicians. Giuseppe Sammartini began his musical education at a young age, studying the oboe with his father. He also learned to play the flute and the violin. He was a prodigious talent, and by the age of 18, he was already performing in public concerts. He soon became known as one of the finest oboists in Italy. In the early 1720s, Giuseppe Sammartini moved to London, where he quickly established himself as a leading musician. He became a member of the Royal Society of Musicians and performed regularly at the concerts held by the society. He also played in the orchestra of the King's Theatre, where he worked alongside some of the most famous musicians of the day. Giuseppe Sammartini was not only a talented performer but also a prolific composer. He wrote music in a variety of genres, including chamber music, orchestral music, and vocal music. His works were highly regarded during his lifetime and were widely performed throughout Europe. One of Giuseppe Sammartini's most famous works is his Concerto for Recorder and Strings in F major. This piece is considered one of the finest examples of the Baroque concerto form and is still performed today. Another notable work is his Sonata in G major for flute and basso continuo, which is a popular piece in the flute repertoire. Giuseppe Sammartini was also known for his contributions to the development of the symphony. He wrote a number of symphonies, including his Symphony in D major, which is considered one of the earliest examples of the classical symphony form. In addition to his compositions, Giuseppe Sammartini was also a respected teacher. He taught the oboe and the flute to many students, including his younger brother, Giovanni Battista Sammartini, who also became a famous composer. Giuseppe Sammartini died in London in 1750 at the age of 55. He left behind a legacy of music that continues to be celebrated today. His works are still performed by musicians around the world, and his contributions to the development of the symphony and the concerto have had a lasting impact on classical music.More....
