La Stagione Orchestra is a renowned classical music ensemble based in Frankfurt, Germany. Founded in 1987 by conductor Michael Schneider, the orchestra has gained international recognition for its innovative programming and exceptional performances of Baroque and Classical music. The birth of La Stagione Orchestra can be traced back to Schneider's desire to create a chamber orchestra that would specialize in historically informed performances of early music. Schneider, who had previously worked as a flutist and conductor with various orchestras in Germany, was inspired by the growing interest in historically informed performance practice that was taking place in the 1980s. With the support of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Schneider founded La Stagione Orchestra in 1987. The ensemble's name, which means "the season" in Italian, reflects its commitment to performing music that is closely tied to the changing seasons and the rhythms of nature. From its early days, La Stagione Orchestra quickly established itself as a leading ensemble in the field of early music. The orchestra's first major performance was a concert of music by Antonio Vivaldi, which was broadcast on German radio and received widespread critical acclaim. Over the years, La Stagione Orchestra has continued to push the boundaries of early music performance, exploring new repertoire and collaborating with leading soloists and conductors. The orchestra has also been recognized for its commitment to education and outreach, regularly offering workshops and masterclasses for young musicians. One of the highlights of La Stagione Orchestra's career was its performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in 2000. The concert, which featured a star-studded cast of soloists and was conducted by Schneider, was hailed as a landmark event in the history of early music performance. In addition to its live performances, La Stagione Orchestra has also released numerous recordings, many of which have received critical acclaim. The orchestra's recording of Handel's Water Music, released in 1995, was particularly well-received, earning a Diapason d'Or award and cementing the ensemble's reputation as one of the leading early music ensembles in the world. Over the years, La Stagione Orchestra has received numerous awards and accolades for its exceptional performances and contributions to the field of early music. In 2007, the orchestra was awarded the Echo Klassik award for its recording of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos, and in 2017, it received the Rheingau Musikpreis in recognition of its outstanding contributions to the music world. Today, La Stagione Orchestra continues to be a leading force in the world of early music, delighting audiences around the world with its innovative programming and exceptional performances. With its commitment to historical accuracy and its passion for bringing early music to life, the orchestra is sure to remain a beloved fixture in the classical music world for years to come.
