Benedetto Marcello was an Italian composer, writer, and politician who lived from 1686 to 1739. He was born into a wealthy Venetian family, and his father was a senator and a member of the Venetian nobility. Marcello was the youngest of six children, and he showed an early interest in music. He began studying the violin and the harpsichord at a young age, and he also learned to sing. Marcello's musical education was extensive. He studied with some of the most prominent musicians of his time, including Antonio Lotti and Francesco Gasparini. He also studied composition with Giovanni Bononcini, who was one of the leading composers of the Baroque era. Marcello's education was not limited to music, however. He also studied law and philosophy, and he was well-versed in literature and the arts. Marcello's musical career began in earnest in the early 1700s. He composed a number of operas, cantatas, and oratorios, and he also wrote instrumental music. His most famous work is his setting of the Psalms, which he composed in the early 1720s. This work is notable for its use of counterpoint and its complex harmonies, which were unusual for the time. Marcello was also a prolific writer.
