He was born on December 25, 1913, in Istanbul, Turkey, to Armenian parents. His father was a musician, and his mother was a singer, which influenced his interest in music from a young age. Ephrikian began his musical education at the age of six, studying the piano with his father. He later studied at the Istanbul Conservatory, where he learned the violin, viola, and composition. After completing his studies, he moved to Paris to further his education at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he studied under the tutelage of renowned musicians such as Nadia Boulanger and Georges Enesco. In 1939, Ephrikian moved to the United States, where he continued his studies at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. He also studied conducting with the legendary conductor Arturo Toscanini. During this time, he began his career as a conductor, leading various orchestras in the United States and Europe. Ephrikian's career as a conductor took off in the 1950s when he was appointed the principal conductor of the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Rome. He held this position for over a decade, during which time he conducted numerous concerts and recordings. He also served as the principal conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Torino. Throughout his career, Ephrikian conducted many notable performances, including the world premiere of Gian Carlo Menotti's opera "The Saint of Bleecker Street" at the Broadway Theatre in New York City in 1954. He also conducted the world premiere of Luigi Dallapiccola's opera "Il Prigioniero" at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1949. Ephrikian was also a prolific recording artist, recording over 200 albums throughout his career. He recorded works by many notable composers, including Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky. His recordings were highly acclaimed and received numerous awards, including the Grand Prix du Disque and the Edison Award. In addition to his work as a conductor and recording artist, Ephrikian was also a composer. He composed numerous works, including orchestral pieces, chamber music, and vocal music. His compositions were performed by many notable musicians and ensembles, including the London Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano. Ephrikian received many awards and honors throughout his career, including the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the Order of Saint Gregory the Great. He was also awarded the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor by the French government. Ephrikian continued to conduct and record music well into his later years.
