Jean Fournet was a French conductor who was born on September 12, 1913, in Rouen, France. He was the son of a music teacher and grew up in a musical family. Fournet began his musical studies at a young age, learning to play the piano and the violin. He later studied at the Paris Conservatory, where he focused on conducting. Fournet began his career as a conductor in the 1930s, working with various orchestras in France. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented and skilled conductor, and his career began to take off. In 1947, he was appointed the principal conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held for 20 years. During his time in Rotterdam, Fournet led the orchestra in many memorable performances and recordings. He was particularly known for his interpretations of the works of French composers, such as Debussy, Ravel, and Saint-Saëns. He also championed the music of Dutch composers, such as Willem Pijper and Henk Badings. In addition to his work in Rotterdam, Fournet was a frequent guest conductor with orchestras around the world. He conducted the London Symphony Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and many others. He also made several recordings with these orchestras, which are still highly regarded today. One of Fournet's most notable performances was his 1958 recording of Ravel's "Boléro" with the Paris Conservatory Orchestra. This recording is considered one of the definitive versions of the piece and is still widely admired today. Fournet was also a respected opera conductor. He conducted many productions at the Paris Opera, including performances of "Carmen," "Don Giovanni," and "La Traviata." He was known for his ability to bring out the drama and emotion in operatic works, and his performances were always highly anticipated. Throughout his career, Fournet received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1961, he was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau by the Dutch government for his work with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also awarded the Legion of Honor by the French government in 1973. Fournet continued to conduct well into his 80s, and his final performance was in 2004, when he conducted the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in a performance of Mahler's Symphony No. 9.
