Vanzo grew up in Marseille, France, where he began his musical training at a young age. He studied at the Marseille Conservatory and later at the Paris Conservatory. Vanzo made his professional debut in 1950 at the Marseille Opera, where he sang the role of the Duke in Verdi's Rigoletto. He quickly gained recognition for his powerful voice and his ability to convey emotion through his singing. In 1952, he made his debut at the Paris Opera, where he sang the role of Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata. Throughout his career, Vanzo performed in many of the world's leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Opera House in London, and La Scala in Milan. He was particularly known for his performances in French opera, including works by Bizet, Massenet, and Gounod. One of Vanzo's most notable performances was in the role of Don José in Bizet's Carmen. He first performed the role in 1958 at the Paris Opera, and it became one of his signature roles. He went on to perform the role in many other productions throughout his career, including a 1964 production at the Metropolitan Opera. Vanzo was also known for his performances in operettas, particularly those by Jacques Offenbach. He performed in many productions of Offenbach's works, including The Tales of Hoffmann and Orpheus in the Underworld. In addition to his work in opera and operetta, Vanzo also performed in concerts and recitals. He was known for his interpretations of French art songs, particularly those by Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy. Throughout his career, Vanzo received many awards and honors for his contributions to classical music. In 1961, he was awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his recording of Gounod's Faust.
