The orchestra was founded in 1947 and has since become one of the most prominent orchestras in the country. The founding of the Ljubljana Symphony Orchestra was a result of the post-World War II cultural revival in Slovenia. The orchestra was established by the Slovenian government as part of its efforts to promote and develop the country's cultural heritage.
