Founded in 1898, the orchestra has a rich history of performing operas, operettas, and ballets in the Viennese tradition. The orchestra was originally established as the orchestra for the Vienna Volksoper, a theater that specialized in popular entertainment for the working class. The theater was founded in 1898 by the Austrian impresario Franz Steiner, who wanted to create a space where ordinary people could enjoy high-quality performances at affordable prices.
